What is BSMS?

Abstract

Post burn deformities can cause loss of livelihood and more importantly, a loss of self-worth. Though many burn related deformities can be corrected helping the patients to lead a productive life, tragically many of these potential patients come from society strata that excludes them from the service loop of reconstructive surgeries. Affordability, lack of awareness, lack of supportive guidance, are some of the bottlenecks. “Burns to Shine”, a project to help these burn survivors regain their independence and self-worth through free reconstructive surgeries is an initiative of Burn Survivor Mission Saviour (BSMS) Trust. Over the past 6 years, the Burns to Shine initiative has facilitated reconstructive surgeries for 126  survivors, and with the track record, we now feel confident to increase our impact manifold and aspire to facilitate surgeries for 25 patients during the current financial year. A patient-centric attitude, the commitment of the team involved, complete end-to-end rehabilitation in addition to surgical interventions, and transparency practices of the trust are the key factors for success of this project.

Burn Survivor Mission Saviour (BSMS) Trust

Burn Survivor Mission Saviour (BSMS) Trust is the brainchild of Neehaari Mandali, a burn survivor herself. Neehaari started BSMS in Andhra Pradesh in 2014 with the aim of creating awareness and mental counselling support for fellow burn survivors who have lost hope in their life. While BSMS initially started with the vision to provide counselling support to burn survivors struggling to come to terms with their situation and gaining societal acceptance, over the course of the past few years, it has expanded its efforts to help survivors with medical interventions as well to regain their capabilities, confidence and lead a normal life. BSMS Trust offers free surgical procedures and post-surgery rehabilitation support to burn survivors. We have facilitated post burns reconstructive surgeries for 126 survivors across India and conducted survivor counselling & rehabilitation for 850+, and conducted many awareness programs across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala. BSMS Trusts approach is to never leave any stone unturned to save a life that may have lost hope. We follow the motto “Yes! We are burnt physically, but not mentally”.
